Yeah, Mon. Jamaican Bobsled Team Hits Olympics Track After Beer Brand Red Stripe Picks Up the Tab
The Olympics are full of stories of unlikely athletes. Remember Eddie the Eagle, the British ski jumper with bottle-thick glasses and a problem standing up on skis? How about the Tongan cross country skier who carried his country flag during this year’s opening ceremonies in sub-freezing South Korea without a shirt? Perhaps the most unlikely athletes ever to compete in the Olympics, though, have to be members of the Jamaican bobsled team. The four-man team competed in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Canada. And, if garnering attention for coming from a country that is so hot it struggles to make ice for drinks wasn’t enough, their story—and fame—was pushed to otherworldly limits through the movie “Cool Runnings.” This year, a team of women from Jamaica wanted to repeat the performance—or do better since the men’s team crashed. The coach said she was forced out, and since she was legally responsible for the sled, she took it with her. When the news made its way to Kingston, the country’s largest beer maker, Red Stripe, contacted the team—via Twitter!—and offered to pay for use of the sled. According to an article in AdAge, the beer brand paid $50,000 to a German company for the use of the sled. "My expense report this month is going to include a bobsleigh on it, and for that, I couldn't be happier," a spokesperson told the magazine. The team was in 20th place after qualifying heats. The run for the gold—or whatever—on Tuesday and Wednesday.
