Margaritaville Brand Expanding North with Hotel in Manhattan

Where can you go if you want palm trees, shark fin-shaped tables, surfboards and a Key West vibe if you aren’t in South Florida? Try Manhattan. Margaritaville Holdings—the global lifestyle brand made famous by singer Jimmy Buffet—is opening a $300 million, 29-story resort hotel in the heart of Times Square in late 2020.

The 234-room hotel includes all of the Buffet-themed concepts one would expect: a Margaritaville restaurant, a rooftop LandShark Bar & Grill/pool, a 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, and a Floridays Airstream Café.

Located at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 40th Street, the laidback concept will provide quite a contrast to the pace and pressures of midtown Manhattan.

“Margaritaville brings fun, relaxation and a much-needed escape from the everyday to any set of coordinates,” said John Cohlan, chief executive officer of Margaritaville. “The Margaritaville Resort Hotel and the lifestyle experience it offers will be the perfect complement to the exciting, fast-paced energy of Times Square and we can’t wait to bring this destination to the travelers and residents of New York City.”

The brand’s expansion into the New York market is its farthest venture north. It has eight resorts scattered throughout Florida, Grand Cayman Island and Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and is opening five others in Nashville, Gatlinburg, Tenn., Costa Rica, Nassau and Kissimmee, Fla.

It also has 32 Margaritaville restaurants, nine Landshark Bar and Grills, seven Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurants, Air Margaritaville airport restaurants and seven 5 O’Clock Somewhere bars throughout the U.S. Beyond that, it operates two casinos, has a food and drink line, footwear, furniture, wine, beer, pool floats, adventure packages and more.

The brand describes its brand as being: “in the tropics somewhere between the Port of Indecision and Southwest of Disorder, but no parallels of latitude or longitude mark the spot exactly. You don't have to be a navigator to get there. Palm trees provide the camouflage, ocean breezes bring the seaplanes and sailboats, tourists and travelers. Passports are not required. Island music rules. No waiting lines for anything. There is a beach and a thatched roof bar perched on the edge of the turquoise sea where you can always find a bar stool. There are lots of lies and loads of stories. It's a comical concoction that blends together like tequila, salt, and limes. Where is Margaritaville? It's in your mind.”
