Del Monte Sickens Over 200

This past weekend, we learned that prepackaged Del Monte vegetable trays have sickened over 200 people so far across the United States. Cyclosporiasis, the nasty parasite that attacks ones intestines, has sickened 212 people across Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The parasite does not typically kill, however it gives its hosts a high fever and pretty severe stomach problems. It looks like nobody knows which veggie trays were at fault for the parasite. Last month, the brand recalled three of its products in stores in six states in the Midwest: vegetable trays that had broccoli, cauliflower, celery, carrots and dill dip. Right now, the CDC is trying to figure out the source of the infection and go from there. In the meantime, we’d recommend staying away from the veggie trays at your next party.

Starbucks Eliminating Plastic Straws By 2020

This morning, CNBC announced Starbucks would be eliminating all of its single-use plastic straws from its stores by 2020. Instead, the coffee giant will offer recyclable strawless lids and “alternative-material straws, like paper or compostable plastic.” With cold beverages making up nearly 50 percent of Starbucks beverage sales, it is no surprise that many have called on the brand to move away from the billion plastic straws used per year. Seattle and Vancouver will be the first two cities to test out this new strawless system, with all of the 28,000 Starbucks going without plastic straws by 2020.
