Dixie Cups Uses AR to Clean Up Children’s Teeth

This week, Dixie, a Georgia-Pacific brand, unveiled a new line of cup designs with interactive games that incorporate mobile technology to make brushing fun and exciting for children.

Children typically are difficult when it comes to brushing their teeth, but with technology continuously improving, Dixie was able to integrate mobile technology into their cup designs to make things exciting for children. Through the Blippar app, children can play games for two minutes while brushing their teeth.

Priti Lokre Sr., Brand Building Manager for Dixie at Georgia-Pacific., discussed the changes.

These augmented reality-enabled brushing games are meant to be fun and engaging for both kids and parents,” Lokre said. “The new Dixie Everyday cup designs can be brought to life through the free Blippar app, where an interactive brushing game lasts two minutes, equivalent to the minimum brushing time recommended by the American Dental Association.

“For our three-ounce cup design series, two new designs feature fun and educational augmented reality brushing games that can be accessed on a tablet or smartphone. In one design, kids can fend off mouth-invading monsters and earn ‘golden molars’ as a reward for completing the full two-minute brushing routine. The more golden molars earned, the more toothbrushes with different super powers can be unlocked as an incentive to keep playing the game and, of course, keep up the brushing routine. In the other design, kids can customize and select a rocket ship to help them explore the ‘molar system’ and learn fun facts about each of the planets and outer space while they are brushing.

“In addition, a new five-ounce cup design features fun and engaging trivia for older children. These larger cups are perfect for snack time or an on-the-go refreshment, and feature riddles and brain teasers to make kids think while they drink with answers that can be unlocked via the app.”

The “don’t rush the brush” experience was a matter of creating an exciting routine instead of daily clashes between parents and children.

“As we explored new designs for our cups, we saw a great opportunity to address a challenge in households that many of our consumers are facing—how to get kids excited about brushing so that it can become a routine and not a daily battle between parent and their kids,” Lokre added. “To make teeth brushing a more fun and positive experience, and to teach kids proper oral care habits, the new Dixie cup designs incorporate mobile technology into the daily brushing routine.”

Technology has changed the Dixie brand altogether over the last few years. Households, which are growing increasingly mobile friendly, when combined with the technologically driven needs of consumers, were drivers in the creation of the games.

“Through these new Dixie designs and with the Blippar app, we’re leveraging the opportunity to appeal to both parents and children in increasingly tech-savvy and mobile-saturated households. As consumer preferences and shopping habits continue to trend toward the mobile space, the brand recognized a way to capitalize on the popularity of augmented reality while helping empower parents to foster fun and sustainable habits for their children’s oral hygiene.”

The digital curriculum within Dixie will continue shifting toward learning how to leverage digital technologies for consumers.

“Part of our long-term vision is to reach consumers anywhere, anytime, anyhow with solutions that resonate,” said Lokre, “and technology will be critical to make that happen. We will continue to look at new and emerging digital technologies to understand how to leverage them into our strategies and designs to meet consumer needs.”
